The premiere of the selected work is part of the activities planned for the celebration of the 25 anniversary of the Symphony Orchestra of Castilla and Leon, designed by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, that will take place in the season 2016-2017. For this reason, a contest was called, whose bases contemplated that the selected work would be composed by an author born or living in Castilla y León, and that it would be directed, in that season, by the conductor of the orchestra, Andrew Gourlay.

The selection process of the works was carried out divided into two phases.. On the one hand, a selection period was opened, aimed at composers born or living in Castilla y León. These composers sent a work for orchestra (no soloists, ni coro) representative of its production. Once the term is over, the head director, Andrew Gourlay, made a pre-selection of the works presented. Completed this phase, Gourlay, together with the OSCyL professors, they studied the shortlisted works and, later, the winning composer was chosen. In this way, Roman Fernandez Stairs has received the commission for the definitive work that will be premiered for the season 2016/2017.

This composer was born in 1987 and began his higher studies in composition and percussion at the Superior Conservatory "Rafael Orozco", From Cordoba, which concluded with an extraordinary end-of-course award. Currently, is studying a master's degree in contemporary instrumental composition at the superior center Katarina Gurska, in Madrid, under the tutelage of the prestigious composers Alberto Posadas Y Aureliano Cattaneo.

He has worked with prestigious formations, and his music has won several awards, como el primer prize in "The Notes Ritrovate Composition Competition" (Fifth edition) held in Avellino (Italy); el primer premo en el concurso "Do what you do" (second edition), held in Segovia; or as a finalist in the arrangement contest organized by the Ensemble Shuffle Concert in New York. Fernández Escalera also has studies in orchestra conducting, that he has developed with great directors like Miguel Romea, Lawrence Ramos, Octav Calleya or Miguel Romero, among others. He has conducted ensembles such as the Córdoba Orchestra, the “Verum” Symphony Orchestra or the C.S.M Orchestra. "Rafael Orozco" of Cordoba.

Among his most immediate projects, focused on composition and direction, highlights the premiere of memories II for bassoon and percussion by the prestigious bassoonist Lorelei Dowling, member of the ensemble Klangforum Wien, and percussionist Christian Dierstein, of the Research Set. Also pending is the release of first morning of autumn for tuba by the tuba player Pedro Delegido Calero; as well as another premiere, attached to your recording: that of memories i for clarinet in B flat, cello and piano. On the other hand, Among his projects, the performance as director of the play also stands out. Lunar Pierrot, from Arnold Schoenberg, by a set created to this.

Román Fernández Escalera resides in Valladolid and combines his work commitment as a part-time teacher of Harmony and Musical Didactics, at the “Marcos Redondo” Professional Conservatory in Ciudad Real, with his master's studies and the rest of his professional activity as a composer and conductor.
