Unlike Beethoven and Bartók, who composed quartets throughout their lives, most French composers approached with some caution a form commonly associated with the Austro-Germanic tradition. Debussy, Ravel and more recently Dutilleux, all of them masters in the art of orchestration, they only dared with the quartets once, but with extraordinary success.
