Down by the Salley Gardens

Bejun Mehta

This program offers a varied overview of the English song, ranging from Edwardian aesthetics of Quilter and Vaughan Williams first to the intense expressiveness of composers like Hwells and Finzi. Arrangements of songs by Britten and Purcell made Tippett, also included, are two examples of reverence and love that two great composers of the twentieth century felt for his own tradition and musical heritage. In all different styles, Behjun Mehta shows the same verbal and vocal mastery that sought the praises of criticism in his first work dedicated to Haendel in Harmonia Mundi.
